Heights in the arithmetic of dynamical systems
Abstract: We will recall some basic facts on height functions on algebraic numbers. The main property of these functions is that there are only finitely many points of bounded height and bounded degree. Therefore, heights are a crucial tool for many finiteness results in Diophantine geometry. We exhibit this statement by proving a conjecture of W. Narkiewicz on the finiteness of certain sets X of algebraic numbers, for which we have f(X)=X for some non-linear polynomial f.
