Arno Kret: Newton stratification of Shimura varieties and the Arthur-Selberg trace formula

The Newton stratification is a decomposition of a Shimura variety reduced at a prime number. One can attach to each point of the Shimura variety an isocrystal, and the Newton strata are the loci where the isomorphism class of this isocrystal is constant. We show how the Arthur-Selberg trace formula can be used to study the Newton strata.
